Irish Blessing Doll  

Simple doll shapes are a feature in many cultures, think of the Matryoshka stacking dolls of Northern Europe. One doll with a simple body shape inside another gradually getting smaller. In this class we will be thinking of this but with a different "slant"! We are going to create our own Irish "sentiment" or "blessing " doll.  

You will select from a beautiful range of Irish tweed and threads, kindly gifted to the class by Margaret Lee, and we will create our own doll, with his / her own quirky personality. We will adorn with stitch inspired by nature (I have also painted some perele thread especially for the class). And we will perhaps put a special message/ sentiment or significant pebble or shell from a place we love inside or give our doll a name. The doll can be for yourself or perhaps a dear friend or relative to provide enjoyment and encouragement. 

We will revisit stitches you perhaps already know and variations i.e. using blanket stitch to create a surface lace effect.  

This workshop will start you on the creative journey which is not a race!!! You will have all the instruction you need to complete your doll at home and hopefully feel inspired to make more, individualizing them for different occasions.  

The tutor, Maura Thomson, is gifting her tutor fee and the cost of any supplies to the charity Medicin Sans Frontiers, so please come along and enjoy some stitching whilst supporting a good cause. 

Please bring your basic sewing kit, and   any inspirational/poetry verse or if you have a special pebble or shell, you wish include in you little doll.

Doodle Rolls 

Have you ever doodled on a notepad when taking a call on the land line? Well, we are going to embark on a journey of doodles on cloth with stitch!  

You will select a piece of raw edged painted silk ribbon and start to create miniature pictures, perhaps linked to tell a story, or a series of your favorite things!  I will provide some hand painted threads for you to make your marks on the cloth and special pens with disappearing ink, to make guidelines for your stitches.  

Revisit some basic stitches and continue your mini artwork at home. This stitchery is small and can be wound around a cork, twig or a spool. It is portable to take on journeys and will give hours of relaxation. And it's good to "zone out" of this mad world currently!  

Please bring your basic sewing kit, also a special twig or cork, small spools will also be available. 

The tutor, Maura Thomson, is gifting the tutor fee and cost of any supplies to the Charity "Marie Curie", so please come and join the workshop both for some happy stitching, and to support a good cause.

Patricia has had a long and distinguished career within the clothing and textile industry in Northern Irelan, more recently as a qualified tutor in the Fashion  and Textile Department of the biggest FE college in Nth Ireland.
